Kastner Intermediate School Instrumental Music and Choral Programs (VAPA)
The Kastner Instrumental Music Department is made up of five different components: Band (Brass, Woodwinds), Orchestra (Strings), Percussion, Choir and Colorguard. Students may be a part of one or more of these ensembles. If students choose to participate in more than one performing arts course they will be required to enroll in Zero Period PE (starts @ 6:45am, 5 days per week) or lunchtime PE (starts at the beginning of lunch, 5 days a week). All of our ensembles perform at several events: concerts, festivals, parades, football games, rallies, assemblies, competitions, and other community events. Some events are outside of the school day and student attendance is expected and will be part of the class grade. Placement in all instrumental music and choral classes at Kastner is determined by the directors.
Soprano-Alto Choir
This course provides the Soprano and Alto female voices the opportunity to sing and perform choral music in school and at community concerts. Special attention is given to the fundamentals of voice production, general music knowledge and the development of the musicianship in ensemble singing. It will focus on daily rehearsal procedures and song literature specific to the female voice. Students will also have travel opportunities to local festivals, workshops and an optional end of the year incentive choir trip. There is an audition process which will take place at students’ elementary feeder schools to determine which choir you will be placed in. Each child will be placed into one of our choirs if you are interested in joining. All choral classes are year-long courses and do have concerts.
”T”-Birds Men’s Choir
This is a progressive course that provides the Tenor and Bass male voices the opportunity to sing and perform choral music in school and at community concerts. Special attention is given to the fundamentals of voice production, general music knowledge and the development of the musicianship in ensemble singing. It will focus on daily rehearsal procedures and song literature specific to the male voice. Students will also have travel opportunities to local festivals, workshops and an optional end of the year incentive choir trip. There is an audition process which will take place at students’ elementary feeder schools to determine which choir you will be placed in. Each child will be placed into one of our choirs if you are interested in joining. All choral classes are year-long courses and do have concerts.
Audition ONLY Choirs- Concert/Chamber/Jazz Choirs
Pre-Requisite: Audition required (Date/Time TBA) & prior choral class preferred
These Choirs are for the highly motivated and musically talented students who are capable of performing at the highest level of proficiency. It will prepare students for advancement to other performing groups at the high school level. These ensembles will have multiple competitions, performances and travel opportunities in and out of school time and will represent Kastner Intermediate to the highest caliber out in the community. Students will also have the option to participate in an end of the year incentive choir trip. There is an audition process which will take place at students’ elementary feeder schools to determine which of these audition only choirs you will be placed in. All choral classes are year-long courses and do have concerts as well as after school practice which are mandatory to attend.
